On Saturday, August 1, 2026, our chapter participated in the Fulbright Global Day of Service by writing letters to elders.
The Fulbright Association Global Day of Service, a newly launched event, commemorates 80 years of the Fulbright Program and “celebrates connection, service, and shared purpose across borders. It invites participants to turn the values of mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and global citizenship into visible action.”
Using information from Love for our Elders, a nonprofit organization “fighting loneliness, one letter at a time,” our virtual event helped their cause “to alleviate social isolation among older adults through handwritten letters and intergenerational connections.”
Altogether, six members of our chapter wrote twelve letters to ten elders on August 1. One member not able to take part on August 1 also wrote a letter to an additional elder on a later date. When reflecting on what the activity meant to them, participants noted, “I appreciated the chance to forge new connections between members of the chapter as we together reached out to those in need,” and “It was great to gather with other Fulbrighters and make a difference, even through a small gesture of a letter.” One participant said, “It was good to do something as a group for elderly who are struggling,” while another added, “I am happy to have provided a smile or moment of comfort for our elders who we should cherish.”
As for what made the day memorable, one participant remarked, “I enjoyed reading the profiles of the seniors,” while another said, “Seeing the lives that the elder folks led, and continue to lead, from their biographies” was memorable. Participants also expressed, “It feels great to find community,” and “I enjoyed reconnecting with Fulbright alumni and creating community through a shared act of service.”
Regarding how this event reflects the values of Fulbright, participants shared, “Having done an ETA in Germany, I’ve always seen my Fulbright grant as grounded in a transatlantic community. The Day of Service reminds me of our capability to organize for good, no matter what side of the pond,” and “This day highlighted the ability of Fulbright to be a global effort for peace, connection, and collaboration.” As one participant put it, “We’re continuing the message of goodwill to all,” while another said, “For me being a Fulbrighter is making a difference in the world or in at least one person. I think with the letters we’ll make the day a little better.” Another participant stated, “It reminded me of just what it means to always be interconnected.”
